Throughout its history, business has shown a remarkable ability to evolve and respond to new opportunities and changing expectations of its constituents and society at large. In the U.S., the rise of computers, the Internet and globalization, in concert with increasing government regulations, shareholder activism and societal expectations, have put businesses and their CEOs in a tighter spot than ever before. The challenge was only compounded by the backlash against business caused by the wave of mega-scandals the likes of Enron and WorldCom in the early 2000´s, the recent near-collapse of the nation´s financial systems, and the resultant economic recession at a depth not seen since the Great Depression in the 1930´s.
Yet something that is more profound has emerged that has changed the business world from the inside: the ascendance of human capital and its ability to innovate as the primary cause of business success or failure. Witness the rise of behavioral economics and the new appreciation of emotional intelligence, and the emergence of ecological economics and the accelerating pace of the corporate social responsibility movement. Business leaders must become increasingly aware of both the inner depths of human nature, and the larger social context in which business is embedded.
Against this backdrop of expanded awareness on the part of business leaders, Esalen Institute and the Conscious Capitalism Institute are jointly sponsoring this Invitational Conclave on Conscious Business to assess the future direction of business. The goal of this gathering is to create a fellowship of CEOs and business thought-leaders who are interested in new ways of doing business through: Expanded consciousness Realizing the full potential of people and relationships Expanding the purpose of business as a force for positive change for humanity Inspiring a broader definition of business success in an increasingly interconnected world. Unlike traditional conferences where business leaders serve as magnets to draw other attendees, this one is designed for CEOs and business-thought leaders themselves to share their experiences and perspective in an intimate small-group meeting (around 25 people) amidst the magical beauty of Esalen. It is our hope that a fellowship will emerge from this gathering that will endure for years."
